How to use
A simple guide to reading and studying.
Sparrow Bible App
Translation: King James Version (KJV)
Study data: App supports Hebrew/Greek Strong's + per-token morphology packs. The bundled demo intentionally contains only a small verified sample; do not infer missing morphology.
How to use
Sparrow Bible App · Guide updated for V16.23
A quick guide to reading and keeping your study in one place. Use the × at the top right to close a popup.
Read the Bible
Choose a book, chapter and verse using the passage selector. Use the arrows to move between chapters and the history button to return to recent passages. A small flower divider marks the beginning of every chapter.
Study words and references
Tap a word to open its available Strong’s definition, original-language information and references. Missing study data is identified rather than guessed. Tap a reference to preview its verse. When an English word maps to multiple underlying words, a compact row shows their count and a word toggle. Select a word to update its definition, header, morphology, references and Blue Letter Bible link together. The first word is selected initially; your selection stays when switching study tabs. Notes remain linked to the verse.
Notes and formatting
Open Notes to search, sort or edit your notes. Choose + New Note or Tools → Add note. In the verse Notes panel, Add note is at the top right, above the scrolling notes. Select text before using B, italic, underline, headings or lists. B toggles bold on or off, including pasted text. Save commits the edit; unfinished local drafts can be recovered. Add comma-separated references and tags to connect your study. Deleting a note or selected notes asks for Yes or No; No or Escape keeps them unchanged.
Import a document into a note
Open a new or existing note and select Import doc on the right of the formatting toolbar. Choose .txt or .docx; Google Docs must first be downloaded as Microsoft Word (.docx) or plain text (.txt). Files are processed on your device without OCR. The limits are 5 MB and 10,000 words per import, plus your account’s note storage capacity. Images are excluded. Bold, italic, underline and strike formatting are retained, including inherited Word styles. Simple tables are imported as editable cells; fonts, page layout and vertical cell merges may be simplified. Headers, footers, comments and footnotes are excluded.
Review the text in the separate preview panel and suggested passages with their source sentences. The preview heading has a shaded background; the window and preview each have their own scroll area. Select, edit, remove or add references. Full book names and common abbreviations are recognised; ranges link the first verse. Existing links stay, and duplicates are skipped. Append to note adds the imported content at the end. Save Note controls saving. Cancelling or an import error leaves your note unchanged.
Use the table icon to insert a table. Place the cursor in a cell and use the shaded row or column icon to expand it, or Remove table to delete that table. Imported tables can be edited directly. An unreadable, password-protected, empty or oversized file shows its reason without truncating your text.
Scan handwritten notes
Use Scan Note in Notes, choose a photograph, review the transcription and save only the sections you want. Review recognised text and references before saving.
Highlights
Select Bible text to highlight it or add a note. Highlight management remains available from the reader and desktop navigation.
Passage history and pins
Open the history button to view recent passages. Use the pin icon beside a passage to keep it in Pinned passages at the top, even after it drops out of recent history. Tap a pinned passage to read it; tap its active pin icon to unpin it. Pins sync with your account and are included in backups. Previously saved passages remain available here.
Timeline
Open Tools → Timeline. The dropdown contains Bible books only. Each view shows the current dated stop and the next stop; use the arrows to advance. Tap a passage to read it. Book-writing dates are estimates; historical entries link their sources and identify dating uncertainty.
Daily reader and Library
Open More → Streams in the Desert for today’s devotional or choose a date on the calendar. Readings preserve paragraph and poem line breaks, with OCR artefacts corrected against a text reference. Library lists the installed Bible and study resources.
Settings, sync and backup
More → Settings contains theme, text size, font, Sync status and Account. Sync status shows saved items, pending changes and the last successful sync. Offline edits remain on your device until they sync. Export Backup downloads personal study data. Import Backup is available for a backup you intend to restore.
Opening the app
The sparrow appears once when the app is opened or refreshed. Reading another chapter, opening notes or navigating inside the app does not replay the intro. Reduced-motion preferences are respected.
